Common/Preferred Stock

Common stock represents shares that give stockholders the right to vote on company matters but come second to preferred stock in receiving dividends. Preferred stock, on the other hand, gives its holders a higher claim on company earnings and assets than common stock, often including fixed dividends, but may not carry voting rights.
